Hooded Merganser (male) – Windsor Ontario

February 23, 2021 By Stan Lee

This is the smallest of the three mergansers in North America. Both male and female have crests that they can raise or flatten. When the male raises his crest, the tin horizontal white stripe turns into a gorgeous white fan, surrounded by black. It can be founded in the eastern United States from the southern Canada–US border along the Atlantic Coast to the Gulf Coast in the region of the Mississippi delta and southern British Columbia to northern Idaho. Length: 40-49 cm Wingspan: 60-66 cm Lifespan: 11-12 years
