Hoatzin – Ecuador

December 28, 2022 By Stan Lee

This distinctive looking bird that resembles a prehistoric creature can be found in the lowlands of northern South America and through out Amazonia. It is the only bird with a digestive system that ferments vegetation as a cow does, which enables it to eat leaves and buds exclusively. This “foregut fermentation” in Hoatzins produces methane, which they belch out, with an odor that’s been compared to that of cow manure. So it is also known as the “Stinky Bird” or “Flying Cow”. Length: 65 cm (26 in)
