Black-capped Chickadee – Windsor Ontario

This small North American song bird is the provincial bird of New Brunswick in Canada. It has the ability to lower its body temperature during cold winter nights to conserve energy. It is also know for its good spatial memory to relocate the caches where it stores food, and its boldness near humans (sometimes feeding from the hand). Length: 13.5 cm Wingspan: 22 cm Lifespan: up to 12 years

    In order to remember where food is hidden, the brain of the chickadee increases by 30% in order to recall where food is hidden. Survival depends on it.
